Elections in Catalonia 2024: Carles Puigdemont, all-in

Barcelona It is not the first time that Carles Puigdemont has presented himself as a candidate for the Catalan elections for Junts after October 1. He did it in 2017 as a candidate for the presidency and in 2021 as head of the list but without presenting himself as an effective candidate, since Laura Borràs was at that time. Now he has the challenge of conveying to the pro-independence electorate that this time is different and that, unlike six and a half years ago, he will indeed return to Catalonia if he wins the elections. For this reason, he is profiling a different campaign from the ones he has starred in so far:

return: Although at the Elna conference last March 21, the day he announced that he was running in the 12-M elections, Puigdemont made his return conditional on gaining the majority to be invested, this Tuesday he clarified RAC1 that will be in Catalonia whether he wins or loses. In this way, he detaches the return from the electoral result and stands apart from what he did in 2017, in which his message was “Vote for the president, if you want the president to return” and entrusted everything to a telematic investiture . Now he wants to leave this framework and install himself in another: convey that his return is a fact thanks to the amnesty, despite the fact that it will depend on the Supreme and the Constitutional.
No screens: The other different element is that Puigdemont will not run a telematics campaign as he has done so far. He does not want to appear through a screen at the rally again as he did in 2017, right at the beginning of the exile, or in the European elections of 2019. Now presence will prevail, but in Northern Catalonia, where most Junts events will be held. It is not for nothing that he has already moved to live in the region of Vallespir and held his first meeting in Elna: the idea is to stage in this way that an eventual return is near.
goodbye: The other headline is that he will leave front-line politics if he cannot be sworn in as president, who is not seen as the head of the opposition. A way to spur his constituents to vote and to convey that this 12-M may be his last move. one all in which can turn out very well or very badly for him, because this also mobilizes his opponents.
