In 2023, Carlos Alcaraz won the title in Madrid

Due to the injury to his right arm he suffered in Monte-Carlo, Carlos Alcaraz will not be able to defend his title in Barcelona these days. In just a few days, the two-time Grand Slam winner will have déjà vu, as his participation in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid is also in danger. Alcaraz said this on Monday in Barcelona.

“My goal is Madrid, but I’m not sure yet,” said Alcaraz, who triumphed in the Spanish capital in both 2022 and 2023. This year the clay court tournament in the Caja Magica starts on April 24th. As the current world number three, Alcaraz would have a little more time if he would benefit from a bye in round one.

A test last Saturday was basically positive, but on Sunday Alcaraz said he felt pain in his forearm again during training. Therefore, the 20-year-old decided to cancel his start in Barcelona on the same day.

Alcaraz said he didn’t want to rush anything. The Iberian’s big goal in the European clay court season is the French Open (May 26th to June 9th). Last year, the former world number one failed in the semi-finals in Paris against eventual winner Novak Djokovic.
