This year’s ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona has to take place without defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard has already secured the title twice, in 2022 and 2023. This year he had to withdraw from the peloton due to an arm injury. The injury also prevented the world number three from taking part in the Masters tournament in Monte-Carlo.

Alcaraz now hopes to make his clay court debut in 2024 at the Mutua Madrid Open, where he also left the tournament as winner in the last two years. And the biggest focus is of course on Roland Garros. Until then, “Carlitos” still has time to recover. The 20-year-old Alcaraz has a 15-4 record so far in 2024, including his fifth ATP Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells. Record 12-time winner Rafael Nadal remains in the draw for Barcelona, where he will face Italian Flavio Cobolli in the first round.
