Rafael Nadal has to pass again. The former number one in the tennis world will not be able to compete in Monte Carlo either: his body is giving the Spaniard a stop sign, who has only been able to take part in two tournaments in the past 15 months.

Former world number one Rafael Nadal has once again canceled participation in a tennis tournament due to physical problems, fueling speculation that his career will soon end. The 37-year-old Spaniard announced on Thursday that he would not take part in the Masters in Monte Carlo.

“Unfortunately I have to announce that I will not be playing in Monte Carlo. My body just won’t allow it,” the 22-time Grand Slam winner wrote on X, the former Twitter.

Nadal canceled all tournament participation after the Australian Open in January 2023 due to a long-term hip injury. This year he made his comeback before the first Grand Slam tournament of the year in Brisbane, but was injured again there and has not played a match since.

Nadal is looking towards the French Open and Paris 2024

“Even if I work hard every day and make maximum progress with all my desire to play and compete again in tournaments that are important to me, the truth is that I cannot play today,” Nadal wrote.

When he made his debut in the clay court season at the Masters in Monte Carlo, which began on Saturday, the Spaniard wanted to take aim at the French Open, which he has already won 14 times in his career. Last year he was missing from the Grand Slam tournament in Paris for the first time since 2005. When he announced his cancellation due to injury back then – in May 2023 – he also said: “Next year should be my last.”

So now another setback. He has to accept the situation and try to look into the immediate future “without losing the tension and the will to play, to give myself a chance for things to get better.” Especially since this year not only the French Open will be held in Roland Garros, the place of his great triumphs: the Olympic Games tennis tournament (July 26th to August 11th) will also take place there. Perhaps at the end the scene of his last major tournament?
