The Rise of Jannik Sinner: A Tennis Prodigy’s Journey to Success

He was born on August 16, 2001 in San Candido, Italy, a little redhead named Jannik Sinner. He made his debut in the sport skiing, but it was at the age of 13 when he began his journey at the Piatti Tennis Center. The rest is history. At just 22 years old, Jannik Sinner has already achieved what for other tennis players on the circuit seems like a very distant dream. He turned professional in 2018 and, from there, his career has only gone uphill.

His great takeoff began in 2019: being practically unknown, a young Sinner became champion of the NextGen Finals by defeating who today would be his doubles partner, Alex de Miñaur, in the final. This triumph earned him recognition from the ATP as rookie of the year.

Just champion of his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open 2024, Sinner already collects two other Masters 1000 trophies (Toronto 2023, and his most recent title in Miami 2024), four ATP 500 and six ATP 250 trophies. ; In addition to having become the only Italian (man or woman) to have reached the top 2 in the world since the first edition of the ATP and the one who has the most titles to date (13). Sinner also collected several victories against Novak Djokovic and even managed to reach the final round at the Nitto ATP Finals 2023. Outside of the ATP, thanks to the redhead the Italian squad managed, for the second time after 47 years, to lift the biggest prize in the Davis Cup finals in 2023.

Current ATP ranking, with Sinner displacing Alcaraz. Sinner has been in the top 100 since October 2019. He entered the top ten in November 2021 and has appeared there permanently since March of last year.

Sinner has no logical explanation: it is an overflow of talent and a firm head. Maybe that’s the key to his game. He has already demonstrated – and what better proof than the Australian Open – the mental (and physical, clearly) strength you need to have to turn around five-set matches when you are two down. We attribute much of this work to his coaches Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Hill, who have been able to guide the Italian’s steps with tremendous wisdom and perseverance. If we go to the numbers, the statistics are clear: his specialty is the types of first impact exchanges (0-4 blows) although despite this he does not seem to have difficulty closing longer and more complicated exchanges. His forehand is like a whip, if you look closely you can notice how he ends his blows with a curve. There are those who even prefer his backhand stroke because of the cleanliness and precision with which he loads his legs. He usually takes the ball early, which allows him to hit with a lot of acceleration and spin. His percentage of games won with his serve exceeds 70% and he is not afraid to take risks with changes of speed and going up to the net.

Journalists and fans agree that, if the panorama continues to paint in these colors, “the carrot boy” would close the year as number 1 in the world, breaking even more records. For now, we continue to enjoy his impressive tennis.

What the Miami Open 2024 left us

Last Sunday the second Masters 1000 tournament of the year in tennis ended and it brought many surprises. The Miami Open consecrated Danielle Collins (USA) as absolute champions, who not only won at home, but is currently in her last year as a professional and takes her most important title in her years as a tennis player; and Jannik Sinner (ITA) who, in addition, has a new best position in the ranking as #2 in the world, dethroning Carlos Alcaraz and a few hundred points away from taking Novak Djokovic’s place at the top.

The sportsfans

Just after the championship in Indian Wells (California) where Carlos Alcaraz managed to defend his title, the tennis players prepared to step on Floridian soil, receive the incandescent sun and begin the second part of what is now known as the “Sunshine Double”.

The Hard Rock Stadium witnessed, for two weeks, an atmosphere of pure energy, passion, raw emotions and, of course, a lot of tennis. The atmosphere? Absolute madness. Whoever writes to you was able to experience first-hand the minute by minute of the event and it would be unfair to reduce it to a few lines.

The presence of the Latin public was not surprising: the passionate and strident shouts of encouragement to the South American tennis players could clearly be heard for several kilometers around, the flags were present at all times and, above all, the support in the face of difficult defeats It was key to building an atmosphere that only this sport gives.

The surprises

Nobody counted on the early elimination of some seeds, on the men’s side, such as Andrey Rublev (6th), Holger Rune (°7), Stefanos Tsitsipas (°12) and Taylor Fritz (13th), who left the tournament in the first rounds with results that left a lot to be desired for the top 20. On the women’s side, promises like Coco Gauff (3rd), Ons Jabeur (6th), Jessica Pegula (5th), Aryna Sabalenka (2nd) and even Iga Swiatek (1st) herself achieved better numbers, but finally fell to give way to Elena Rybakina (°4) and Danielle Collins (°53) to the last game.

But if we talk about surprises, we have to mention, without a doubt, the rapid rise of Grigor Dimitrov, who claimed after several tough defeats in recent years and passing over the title favorite, Carlos Alcaraz, the place he wanted so much. in the final -although without success to take the main trophy-. Dimitrov, today 9th in the world, returns to the top 10 after seven years (in 2017 he ranked 3rd) with more self-confidence than ever and giving a new dose of enthusiasm to those of us who admire his tennis.

The winners

The WTA has a new American champion: Danielle Collins, at 30 years old and having announced her retirement at the beginning of 2024, closed several mouths and lifted the trophy for what became the most important title of her career. The most interesting? Collins won as a qualifier and, with this, becomes the second unseeded woman to win the title in Miami since Kim Clijsters in 2005. Despite the victory, Collins mentions “not reconsidering her retirement at the end of this year” to dedicate himself to starting a family. A spectacular way to close her professional life.

At this point in the year (although not very advanced) the victory of the brand new 2nd in the ATP, Jannik Sinner, no longer surprises anyone. Sinner has been giving, for a few months now, a master class on how to be, without any mercy, the best tennis player in the world – even his own teammates recognize it! -. Almost without errors and with an iron mind, the Italian accomplished his revenge and managed to lift his second M1000 trophy (after Toronto last year) in a tournament that saw him in the final three years in a row.

La Bicolor is part of group A and will make its debut against Ricardo Gareca’s Chile at the AT&T Stadium.
