World No. 3 Coco Gauff was eliminated in the round of 16 of the WTA 1000 in Madrid by her compatriot Madison Keys. No. 4 Elena Rybakina, on the other hand, qualified without incident.

For the first time in her career, Coco Gauff played in the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 in Madrid. But she won’t go any further. The American, world No. 3, was eliminated by her compatriot Madison Keys (20th), after a match in three sets and 2 hours 28 minutes of play: 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. For this first confrontation between the two players on clay (2-2 on the other surfaces), the winner of the last US Open was particularly weighed down by her service, committing thirteen double-faults and conceding seven breaks. And notably three in the first, which she finally lost 7-4 in the deciding game. The second set started on the same basis, with numerous breaks on each side, and it was Gauff who had the last word, at 5-4 on his fourth set point. In the third, the world No. 3 led 4-2, but then lost track of her game, conceding four games in a row, and therefore the match. Madison Keys will face Ons Jabeur for a place in the quarterfinals.

Un quart 100% Kazakh

At the bottom of the table, Elena Rybakina won her 22nd victory in 25 matches since the Australian Open, defeating the young Czech Sara Beljek, 136th. The Kazakh was not trapped by the tough left-hander and won 6-1, 6-3 in 1h16, even if she had to defend fifteen break points (thirteen saved). Rybakina took the opponent’s serve at 0-0, 1-1, 3-1 and 5-1 in the first set, and was 3-2 and 4-3 in the second, before winning on her third ball of match. There will inevitably be a Kazakh in the last four, since she will face in the quarterfinals her compatriot Yulia Putintseva (50th), who defeated world No. 11 Daria Kasatkina: 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in 1h54, after a match with nine breaks. Putintseva led 3-0 in the first set before losing six games in a row, but she recovered well by winning the next two with breaks at 3-2 and 5-2. Also note the qualification of Russian prodigy Mirra Andreeva (43rd), on her 17th birthday, who beat world No. 13 Jasmine Paolini. She won 7-6, 6-4 in 1h41 in a match with eleven breaks. The Italian, who defeated Caroline Garcia on Sunday, nevertheless led 5-2 in the first set, missing a set point. She finally lost 7-2 in the decisive game, before losing the second set by conceding her serve at 1-0, 3-0 and 5-4.
