In the game, the home team was superior from the start: Leverkusen combined routinely and increased the pressure on Bremen with every minute, who were able to do less and less as the game progressed. Leverkusen received a penalty in the 25th minute after a foul on Jonas Hoffmann. Victor Boniface converted confidently. After that, Bayer appeared much more relaxed and was able to exploit its superiority. However, the score remained 1-0 until the break.

In the second half, Leverkusen continued where they started and dominated the game. In the 60th minute, Granit Xhaka scored from a distance to make it 2-0: from 26 meters out. Then it was Leverkusen’s top talent Florian Wirtz who made it an impressive 5-0 with a hat trick (68th, 83rd, 90th minute).

In the 68th, Wirtz, who had previously been substituted at half-time, came on and, like Xhaka, also scored from distance. The ball dropped just in front of the goal and hit under the crossbar. In the 83rd minute, Exequiel Palacios sent on Wirtz, who routinely converted. The fans stormed the pitch after the score was 4-0. Wirtz tried to calm the fans while he was still cheering. After Wirtz made it 5-0, the final whistle blew when the pitch was stormed again.

After eleven years of Munich dominance

With Bayer’s success, it is the first time in eleven years that a team other than FC Bayern Munich has managed to become German champions. The Leverkusen team is not only breaking through years of Munich dominance, but is already crowning an impressive season: the team is still unbeaten.

When coach Xabi Alonso took over the team last season, the club was still in the relegation zone. Under Alonso, Bayer was able to play its way up to the Europa League by the end of the 2022/23 season.

Bayer Leverkusen meets 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The quarter-final second leg of the Europa League against West Ham United will take place on April 18th. Leverkusen won the first leg 2-0.
