Amira Arfaoui only moved from Bayer Leverkusen to the newcomer from Middle Franconia in the winter and immediately fought for a regular place in Thomas Oostendorp’s team. The Nuremberg coach has to replace the variable offensive player, who plays in central midfield for FCN, on the remaining five match days of the Bundesliga – the 24-year-old will be out for a long time due to a knee injury.
Arfaoui sustained the injury while playing for the Swiss national team, for whom she has played two games so far. A third appearance was to be added last Friday; national coach Pia Sundhage had included her in the starting line-up for the game against Turkey.
Injured while warming up
But it didn’t get that far; Arfaoui was seriously injured during the warm-up. After her return to 1. FC Nürnberg, she was immediately examined and a torn meniscus was discovered. Instead of helping the club women, currently second-to-last two points behind 1. FC Köln, in the relegation battle, she now has to undergo an operation.
“This news is of course a bitter setback for us. Amira was an important part of the team and integrated excellently in a very short time. We will give her the best possible support on the way to her comeback and hope that she can return to the pitch quickly “, said Osman Cankaya, sporting director of the Nuremberg women.
After the international break, Nuremberg, which is threatened with relegation, will play against SGS Essen (H, Sunday, 2 p.m.), Eintracht Frankfurt (A, April 20, 2 p.m.), RB Leipzig (H, May 6, 7:30 p.m.), FC Bayern Munich (May 12th, 2 p.m.) and bottom team MSV Duisburg (May 20th, 3:30 p.m.).
