Big Arab money is also hacking European basketball

For several years, there have been rumors about the possible joining of the Dubai basketball team to the ULEB Euroleague. The first step in this direction was taken in mid-March. Dubai will have a unit in the Adriatic League from next season. Most likely, in a year or two, the door will be opened to the tournament of Europe’s strongest clubs.

This move has received criticism from several quarters – for example, the head coach of the Spanish club Vitoria “Baskonia” Duško Ivanovic said that Dubai has no place in the Euroleague – but big money plays a big role. It is similar in football. Several top level clubs are owned by people who come from the Gulf countries.

“Dubai put 69 million euros on the table, of which 65 million will go to the owners for the Euroleague license,” the article of the Serbian publication “Mozzart Sport” states.

The Dubai team’s joining the Adriatic League (ABA) was decided in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, where the representatives of the teams of this league gathered. Previously, only basketball clubs from the countries of the former Yugoslavia competed in the ABA. Now there will also be a team from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The number of teams in the league will be increased from 14 to 16 units.

Several European sports portals report that the UAE basketball team joining the Euroleague is only a formality and a matter of time…
