In front of a backdrop that is unrivaled in Europe, Berlin celebrates the German volleyball championship. In the end, they achieved a historic success against their long-term rivals. See the highlights in the video here.

Managing director Kaweh Niroomand had to collect himself briefly before he could talk about the significance of his BR Volleys’ 14th championship title. With this success, the Berliners are now the sole record holders. “It’s not just winning a fifth game, but the result of 50 years of building up volleyball in Berlin,” said the 71-year-old after the dominant 3-0 (25:16, 25:16, 25:17) against rivals VfB Friedrichshafen in the decisive game on Sunday. It is “something for the history books.”

For Niroomand it is also the crowning achievement of his life’s work. He has managed the club since 1990. It started in a small hall in front of 160 spectators, he recalled. On Sunday, 8,553 fans streamed into the Max Schmeling Hall and created a backdrop that is unparalleled in volleyball Europe.

He had had the goal of becoming record champions for a long time, but had not expressed it publicly. “But at the moment today, when it’s here, it’s a very special championship for me,” he said, touched. When he was the last to walk to the winning photo, he received extra applause.

Many players and coaches came and went over the years. Niroomand and many employees are constants. “We are in the spotlight now because we are the ones who won the 14th championship. But you shouldn’t forget all the people in the background who have worked their asses off for this over the last few years and decades,” said captain Ruben Schott.

Friedrichshafen or Berlin? – There has been no other champion since 1997

As in 2022, the Berliners made up a 0-2 deficit in the series against the Häfler. It is the eternal duel of German volleyball: the teams met in the final for the eleventh time in a row. There has been no other champion since 1997 – the Berliners have now left their long-term rivals behind in the number of league titles.

Berlin has long been ahead of the game in more than just this category. The audience response, the hall, the sponsors and the infrastructure created: The Volleys don’t just play in their own league in terms of sport. The title went to the capital for the eighth time in a row. “Energy and will were there, but if you’re honest, everything has to go well for us,” said Friedrichshafen’s exhausted coach Mark Lebedev after the game, describing the conditions in order to defeat the Volleys in a series.

Those responsible for the Volleyball Bundesliga (VBL) were extremely satisfied with the play-offs. “We couldn’t have wished for better advertising for volleyball than this exciting final series, which was hard to beat in terms of drama,” said managing director Daniel Sattler. The previous semi-finals also showed what good work is being done at the locations.

Nevertheless, the VBL certainly wouldn’t be upset if there were another champion again. Sattler now sees significantly more quality at the top. The SVG Lüneburg and the Grizzlys Giesen in particular have made great progress.

“This shows that volleyball works”

“These are locations that were completely different eight years ago, but have approached the growth process sustainably and have invested in infrastructure, management and sport in unison,” said Sattler. “This shows that volleyball works.” It remains to be seen whether they can threaten the dominance of the BR Volleys, which is reminiscent of the Bayern Munich footballers.

The promotion package with four clubs has also strengthened the league, which is now in a significantly better situation than that of the women. All promoted teams want to play in the first league again next season.

“The others have developed, thank God, but we have not only developed the club, but we have also modernized it by giving it a few different legs,” said Niroomand. He mentioned youth work, social commitment and women’s volleyball as keywords.

However, he didn’t want to look too far into the future, but instead gave the motto that was more important in the short term: “Into the cabin. Drink beer. Celebrate until the doctor comes.” But there will only be a short break for the national players around Schott, Johannes Tille and Tobias Krick. Then the Nations League and especially the Olympic Games come up.
