Bayer Leverkusen Secures Historic German Championship Title, Thanks to Xabi Alonso’s Coaching Brilliance

Not Bayern, but Bayer is showing off the German championship scale this year. In our podcast Sporza Daily, Bundesliga commentator Luc van Doorslaer highlights Bayer Leverkusen’s “unique performance”.

After 11 in a row for FC Bayern Munich, Bayer 04 Leverkusen has won the German title, for the first time in the history of the German factory team. With 5 match days to go, Leverkusen can no longer be caught by the Rekordmeister.

“Bayer wins the German football championship with a huge lead over Bayern. A unique achievement,” says Bundesliga commentator Luc van Doorslaer in Sporza Daily.

Because Bayern failed? “Yes,” Van Doorslaer nods, “although they didn’t do too badly.”

“Until a few weeks ago, Bayern had collected more points than last season or the previous seasons.”

“But let us especially highlight Leverkusen’s performance. They played exceptionally positive and technically well-groomed football.”

Most players will stay for Alonso.

The architect of positive and technical football comes from Spain. As a player, Xabi Alonso (42) scored with the national team, with Real Madrid, with Liverpool and with Bayern Munich. Now he is also succeeding as a trainer.

“When Alonso took over in Leverkusen, the results improved immediately,” Luc van Doorslaer saw, “although they were not yet playing good football. Alonso chose to first establish a defensive organization.”

“He has slowly built that up. You saw that in the course of last season and now it is fully reflected. Alonso has found a balance in his core. Not with world top players, but with complementary players.”

After a successful career as a player, Xabi Alonso now also scores as a coach.

Van Doorslaer is talking about Granit Xhaka (ex-Arsenal), youth product Florian Wirtz or Victor Boniface (ex-Union).

How likely are they to continue working in Leverkusen? Or is the temptation too great to seek other places?

“That is the classic schedule,” says Van Doorslaer, “but those chances have been turned by Xabi Alonso’s decision.”

“He has announced that he will stay in Leverkusen. A special decision that has been very positively received by his core. Most players will stay for Alonso,” believes the Bundesliga watcher.
