Racing Genk Loses Top Talent Ilyes Bennane to Anderlecht: Behind the Departure

Racing Genk has lost Ilyes Bennane, a great talent of just 13 years old who will join Neerpede for next season. But on the Limburg side, we will obviously not mourn this departure.

A few months ago, Ilyes Bennane made the buzz at just 13 years old, becoming the youngest Belgian international in history in the U15 selection. A creative midfielder trained at Racing Genk, Bennanen was presented by many as the “greatest talent” in Belgian football.

A profile which is somewhat reminiscent of that of a certain Rayane Bounida, whom RSC Anderlecht saw leave Neerpede at a very young age for Ajax Amsterdam. But also several great talents such as Mika Godts or Konstantinos Karetsas, who moved from RSCA to Genk.

These last departures had remained in the throat of Jesper Fredberg, who has his revenge: Ilyes Bennane, after having slammed the door of Genk, will join Anderlecht, we learned this morning. Except that on the side of Racing Genk, we present the story differently in the Newspaper.

De Condé accuses Bennane’s family

Pour Dimitri De Conde, sporting director of Racing Genk, the player’s problem “was his entourage”. It also came back to us, a little over a month ago, that Bennane’s family had caused a scene following a U15 match.

“Bennane’s parents criticized the staff, the other players, the club,” explains De Condé, who attempted to consult with the family. “It didn’t work and in agreement with the youth team staff, we gave up.”

“The values and standards defended by our club as well as our way of working were unfortunately no longer compatible with the expectations of those around Ilyes”, further specifies Dimitri De Condé. “We invested a lot in him but at some point, no one is above the club.”

What seems strange is that this type of speech closely resembles the one Jesper Fredberg gave last year when discussing the RSCA’s new policy towards young people. Welcoming a player whose entourage does not respect the institution does not seem to “fit” with the mentality of the CEO Sports of Anderlecht…
