There are interesting players among the new arrivals. BILD presents three of them.

Augustine Rubit (34/Rostock Seawolves)

The American (34) knows German basketball very well. In the past he was under contract in Tübingen, Ulm, Bamberg and with Bayern. In total he makes 236 appearances in the BBL.

Rubit grew up in Houston under the most difficult circumstances. Lives with four siblings in a hotspot area of the Texas metropolis. His mother Kimberly brings home crack and is addicted.

“She was sometimes there and sometimes not,” says Rubit. His big sister Lorraine, then 17, looks after Augustine (12) and the siblings. While his mother keeps ending up in prison, Lorraine keeps the family together.

Rubit: “A lot went haywire during that time. I went to five or six different schools.”

During the 6th grade he was hardly there at all, hanging out on the street with his friends: “Of course there were a lot of older boys in our neighborhood. No gangs, but enough people selling drugs.”

Later, Augustine’s grandparents took care of her, then a foster family. He focuses on basketball, goes to college (South Alabama) and then turns professional in Europe.

Last February, Rubit (then Bayern Munich) tore his Achilles tendon. He hasn’t played since. In the relegation battle, the Seawolves are still relying on the power forward – and his experience. However, there are still a few medical checks to be performed before his debut for Rostock.

Frank Gaines (33/Tigers Tübingen)

When a player is greeted in their own press release with the words “is a true globetrotter who always moves on after a short time,” then the fans know that they are dealing with a globetrotter when it comes to basketball.

Gaines is in his eleventh year as a professional, Tübingen is his 18th (!) club. After college in the USA, he played in the G-League, Italy, Israel, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Russia, Poland and Portugal.

In the 2016/17 season he played in Germany and was under contract with Rasta Vechta (32 BBL games).

Ariel Hukporti (21/MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg)

The center (2.13 meters) was long considered the great hope of German basketball. A move to Melbourne United followed in 2021 and a ruptured Achilles tendon in the 2022/23 season.

The former youth international has now fought his way back and narrowly missed out on the Australian championship with his team.

In Ludwigsburg, where he played between 2016 and 2020, he should make the difference in the fight for the play-offs and in the knockout phase of the Champions League.

Hukporti himself wants to recommend himself for the NBA draft. Experts see him as a second-round pick.
