Regretful Exit: Gaël Monfils Falls Short Against Marton Fucsovics in Estádio Millennium

Gaël Monfils should have big regrets when he leaves the Estádio Millennium on Thursday evening. Because the Frenchman had three match points, and was unable to convert any of them, leaving the victory to the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (1-6, 6-1, 7-5, 2 h 05′). Monfils, 45th in the world, was nevertheless very well engaged in this meeting, with a rhythmic first set, a double break without flinching, all done in 29 minutes.

The Hungarian rebelled in the second round, with a reverse scenario and score. To Fucsovics the powerful and winning shots, the beautiful drop shots, to Monfils the mistakes. The trend continued at the start of the next set, with the entry break for Fucsovics. But Monfils came back to the level, offering himself the first three match points.

Unable to change pace, and facing an opponent who had never been so close to winning after three failures, Monfils let the opportunities slip away. The 85th at the ATP concluded on his second match point and a too long return from the Frenchman. In the quarter-finals, Marton Fucsovics will face Norwegian Casper Ruud.
