On April 11, Basketball Australia announced the 22-man shortlist for Australia’s squad for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. After a training camp in July, the list will be narrowed down to 12 people.
Of the 22 members, 10 are NBA players. Dante Exum (Dallas Mavericks), Dyson Daniels (New Orleans Pelicans), Duop Reese (Portland Trail Blazers), Jack White (Memphis Grizzlies), Jock Landale (Houston Rockets) , Joe Ingles (Orlando Magic), Josh Guidy (Oklahoma City Thunder), Josh Green (Dallas Mavericks), Matisse Thybulle (Portland Trail Blazers), Patty Mills (Miami Heat) 10 people have been named as members, ranging from veterans to promising young players.
Johnny Furphy of the University of Kansas, who is expected to be a first-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, is also a member. B League players Nick Kaye (Shimane Susanoo Magic) and Xavier Cooks (Chiba Jets) were also selected.
Meanwhile, the name of Ben Simmons (Brooklyn Nets), who had expressed his desire to participate in the Olympics as a member of the Australian team, was not on the list. Simmons was also mentioned in the release, saying, “Prior to the discovery of his back injury in early 2024, Simmons was fully committed to the Paris Olympics.”
The Australian team won a bronze medal at the last Tokyo Olympics. They were considered one of the favorites to win the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, but they finished in 10th place. Head coach Brian Gaugin, who is in charge of the Australian national team and is eager for revenge, expressed his enthusiasm in the release as follows:
“I would stress to the team that we are not looking to imitate or copy other countries’ basketball. Our goal is to beat them. We will play Aussie ball and give our all. I will fight with you.”
