Badminton Success in Valencia: Xàtiva Club Shines at Regional Championship

The Regional Championship of the Under-19 and Senior categories was held in Valencia. The Fuensanta Municipal Pavilion brought together a total of 93 participants from 14 clubs in the Community. The Xàtiva Badminton Club had eight athletes registered, but six finally participated due to the absences of Santiago Villanueva and Juan Carlos Hintze due to injury and illness respectively. Despite the two casualties, the Setabe athletes achieved a total of 9 medals at the end of the day.

In the Under-19 category: in the women’s doubles event, the athlete Andrea Orquín along with Soraya Gandía from CB Enguera. managed to overcome the group stage in first position, reaching the semifinals where they had a complicated match against the Enguerina couple composed of Vega Calatayud and Ivayla Valentinova, in which after three tight sets they managed to win 20-22, 21-13 and 21-18. In the final they met again with the CB San Fernando de Valencia couple, formed by Julia Albertos and Ángela Viray, whom they had already defeated in the group stage, but this time the story was going to be different because Andrea and Soraya They did not go out to compete in the final with the necessary confidence and they were not able to impose their game continuously, having many ups and downs in the sets, this led them to play the final in three sets to end up losing 21-12, 16-21 and 21-12, to earn a little money because their level is much higher than that demonstrated throughout the past Sunday.

In the singles event, despite recovering the good feelings in the game on the part of the Setabense compared to the last master’s degree, it was not enough to overcome Sara Llopis in the round of 16, where the woman from Alicante beat her by 21- 13 and 21-12.

The remaining eight medals won were concentrated in the senior category. We start with the SV ++ category where Carlos Martínez managed to win the men’s singles and doubles events, adding two new golds to his great record.

In the singles event, he confidently won all of his group matches without giving up any set. And in the doubles event he played the final against the duo formed by Luciano Martínez and Jesús Prieto, whom they beat 21-15 and 21-11, winning a new gold medal.

We moved on to the C2 category where José Luis Llopis reached the semi-finals where he lost to Ángel Moreno in a disputed match where the Setabense kept the pressure until the last rally, losing by a double 21-15 that earned him the bronze medal. In the men’s doubles event he teamed up with Antonio Jover from CB San Fernando in Valencia, achieving a new bronze.

Now it’s time for the B1-B2 category, where in the women’s doubles event Mª José Mompó and Mónica Manrique (CB San Fernando Valencia) managed to win the final by 21-9 and 21-19 over the CB El Campello couple formed by María Dolores López and María Poveda, thus achieving gold.

In this same category, but in the mixed doubles event, the Setabe couple formed by Julio Martín and Mª José Mompó managed to qualify as first in the group and access the final draw where they beat the duo made up of Gary Clark and Patricia Gomis in the semifinals, to move on to the final that pitted them against Iván Gallardo and Mª Jesús Almagro, the latter winning 21-13 and 21-15. The people from Setabe got a new silver medal.

We close the doubles events, with the men’s doubles, where Julio Martín and Juan Antonio López won the bronze after losing in the semifinals against the couple formed by Iván Soler and Mikhail Sychev, by 21-17 and 25-23, with an exciting and an even second set, where Julio and Juan Antonio were very close to forcing the third and final set. On the other hand, Daniel Meseguer was paired with Pablo Lafuente from CB Alboraia, but they could not successfully overcome the group stage.

In the singles event of the B1-B2e category Daniel Meseguer won bronze after losing in the semifinals against David Ramal.

At the end of the matches, the trophies were presented by the president of the Badminton Federation of the Valencian Community and the president of the San Fernando de València Badminton Club.

In Medina del Campo

Last weekend the CB of 154 athletes from 63 clubs throughout the national territory.

The athlete from Sebastián once again had a great tournament, reaching bronze in the men’s doubles event and a well-deserved fifth place in the singles event. Below, we detail his progress throughout the two days of competition.

In the singles event, Vicente Ferrer was placed in group D where he achieved a valuable second place that gave him a place in the round of 16 where he faced José Manuel Bartolomé from CB Laguna, a match that the Seta native scored 21-10. and 21-18 to reach the quarterfinals where he faced one of the favorites, Abel Hernández, who wanted to avoid surprises and was very strong from the beginning and beat Vicente 21-12 and 21-6, leaving the setabense than a creditable 5th place.

In the doubles event he competed as a pair with Alberto Pascual (Independiente), both starting again from group D, where they classified in second place, gaining access from here to the quarterfinals where they would have to face each other with the number seeds. two of the tournament.

Already in the quarterfinal round they faced, as expected, against the number two couple, formed by Manuel Molina and Antonio Jesús Rodríguez, who had to be forced to retire in the initial stages of the match due to an injury to one of their members. In this way, Vicent and Alberto reached the semifinal where they met the duo composed of José Manuel Bartolomé and Isaac Martin, in a very close match that lasted more than 50 minutes and was decided in three sets by 21-17. 16-21 and 21-19. In this way, Vicent and Alberto were left out of the final after a hectic match that could have fallen on the side of Vicent and Alberto, however, they achieved a creditable third place in a National Master.

School Games

Last Saturday, April 13, the player of the B Xàtiva Aarón Fasanar traveled to the town of Enguera to take part in the third provincial day of the “School Games of the Valencian Community” in the Benjamin category that brought together 20 athletes in the facilities municipal buildings of the Jaime Alegre Pavilion.

A morning session of badminton began at 9:00 a.m. where the athletes shared a joint warm-up and later around 9:20 a.m. the dispute of the different matches began. In the singles event, the Setabense achieved a victory in the two matches played and later in the doubles event, partnering with his partner Adolfo Costa (AMPA Ayora), they managed to add two more victories, extending their good streak of play and results in the doubles.

After this day, the athletes classified for the JJEE Provincial Championship will be announced, which will be held on May 11 in the town of Xàtiva.

The weekend agenda

On Sunday, April 21, the town of Xàtiva becomes the epicenter of badminton in the Valencian Community with the dispute of the Autonomous Championship in the Under-11, Under-15 and Absolute categories. This event will bring together 97 athletes from twelve clubs in the community at the facilities of the Francisco Ballester Municipal Pavilion, starting at 9:00 a.m. they will compete to be on top of the podium at the end of the day. The Xàtiva Badminton Club will have the presence of several athletes, who will represent the people of Setaba in the Under-15 and absolute categories. The day will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the facilities of the Francisco Ballester Municipal Pavilion in the town of Xàtiva.

From April 15 to 21, 2024, the town of Vitoria hosts a new edition of the Spanish Para Badminton International 2024, which on this occasion brings together 280 athletes from 42 nationalities in an event that is already a reference in the parabadminton circuit. One more year from the Xàtiva Badminton Club we have the representation of Thomas Wandschneider who participates again with the German para-badminton team and who starts as seed number two in the individual event and as seed 3 in the doubles event in which he will play alongside his regular partner Rick Cornell.

On Saturday, April 20, the 4th Provincial Day of the “School Games of the Valencian Community” will be held in the Fuensanta Municipal Hall in the city of Valencia in the youth category. This day will be the last and therefore will decide the six places in each of the tests that will give access to the dispute of the Provincial Championship of the “School Games of the Valencian Community” that will be held on the next 11 May in the town of Xàtiva . The Xàtiva Badminton Club and the Municipal Sports School will be present with the participation of more than a dozen athletes.

This Thursday the Rectora Trophy will be held in the town of Valencia, specifically at the Aulario V – South Court facilities of the University of Valencia, in which the athlete from the Xàtiva Badminton Club David Polop will participate. This tournament will take place starting at 8:00 p.m. at the University facilities.
