Luis Severino shines on the mound but Mets fall short in 3-1 loss to Cubs

Pitcher Luis Severino may have muzzled the Chicago Cubs hitters for seven innings, but his New York Mets teammates simply did not support him in a 3-1 loss on Monday.

Severino gave up his only hit of the game in the eighth inning, a single from Dansby Swanson. The gunner finally conceded a point on a banal option in the infield from Nick Madrigal.

With runners on the ends of the diamond, Madrigal hit a ball toward third baseman Joey Wendle, who had just entered the game. Wendle could have thrown the ball to his receiver to try to cut off the tying run. Instead, he went all out with a throw to second in hopes of setting up a double play, which never happened.

By the time he went to the showers, Severino had five strikeouts to his name.

The Mets’ replacement then trashed Severino’s fine work. After giving up a double to Mike Tauchman, pitcher Edwin Diaz was victimized by a two-run homer from Christopher Morel in the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie.

The Mets’ only run came on Brandon Nimmo’s third homer of the season, who hit a long lead to lead off the 13th career start.

Cubs starter Jameson Taillon was also very solid on the mound, allowing only one earned run on four hits in seven innings. 57 of his 78 pitches were strikes.

Mark Leiter Jr. (1-1) got two outs to sign the victory while Hector Neris made his fourth save even though he walked twice. He struck out DJ Stewart and Brett Baty to end the game, which lasted two hours and five minutes.
