Austria takes a 1-0 lead in the Billie Jean King Cup duel against Bulgaria.
Tamira Paszek (WTA-337th) won the opening game of the Europe/Africa Zone I international match in Pool A against 20-year-old Lia Karatancheva (WTA-505th) on Wednesday with 7:5, 6:2.
The subsequent singles match between Julia Grabher (WTA-130th) and Isabella Shinikova (WTA-266th) cannot be played because the Vorarlberg native tore her back with a bad step when hitting the ball and canceled her appearance for safety reasons.
However, due to a new rule change, Tamara Kostic can step in as a replacement at short notice. The 18-year-old Austrian is now playing against Isabella Shinikova (WTA 266).
In the final doubles, Melanie Klaffner/Tamara Kostic will meet Lia Karatancheva/Gergana Topalova.
Austria had already won the group before the encounter and thus qualified for the playoff games in the fall.
