Arthur Rinderknech dominated Hugo Gaston in the all-French first round battle at the ATP tournament in Bucharest. Benjamin Bonzi, for his part, benefited from Richard Gasquet’s package but was eliminated by Argentinian Federico Coria.

The draw for the ATP tournament in Bucharest gave rise to a fratricidal duel between Arthur Rinderknech and Hugo Gaston. A match can no longer be contested between two players of a substantially similar level. After more than an hour of play (1h08), the 96th in the world took an option in the deciding game (7-6(6)). However, the Varois equalized with the benefit of a break acquired just before serving to win the set (6-4). Then in the final act, Arthur Rinderknech did the same thing again at 5-5 to finally win in almost three hours ((6)6-7, 6-4, 7-5). In the second round, he will have a lot to do against the number 4 seed, the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, winner at the start of the year of the Auckland tournament.

Bonzi drafted and immediately eliminated

As for Benjamin Bonzi, he had the immense pleasure of entering the main draw despite his defeat against the Pole Valentin Vacherot in qualifying. Last minute package, Richard Gasquet threw in the towel this Monday and it was therefore the Nîmes who was drafted to face Federico Coria. But barely three hours after his qualifying match, “La Bonze” was not able to destabilize the Argentinian, victorious in two sets (6-4, 6-2). He will meet his compatriot, Francisco Cerundolo, seeded n°1 in Romania and exempt from the first round, in the second round.

This Tuesday, two other French people will take to the track in Bucharest. Corentin Moutet will challenge the Canadian Denis Shapovalov, invited by the organizers, while Grégoire Barrère, from qualifying, will face the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis.
