The Tour of the Basque Country is marked by the many crashes in the stage race. Yesterday we saw major leaders leave the round after a heavy crash. Even today, misfortune is just around the corner. Mikel Landa was involved in a crash in the peloton and dropped out.
In the run-up to the first climb of the day, things went wrong for the Spaniard from Soudal-Quick Step. The climber fell together with teammate Gil Gelders, which means that the misfortune of the Belgian formation in the Basque Country continues. Yesterday the team also lost leader Remco Evenepoel. This leaves the team with only four men.
In addition to Landa and Gelders, Pelayo Sánchez (Movistar) and Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar) have also left the race. The Spanish teammates are involved in the same crash. Nothing is yet known about the injuries of the crash victims. It could be seen how Landa was lifted onto the brand card in his home region. The Bask has been taken to hospital.
There has been a crash at #Back2024.
Both @gilgelders and @MikelLandaMeana were involved and had to abandon the race.
We’ll keep you updated.
