Yannick Gerhardt has emphasized enough in recent years how comfortable he feels at VfL Wolfsburg. While Lower Saxony is just a stopover for many of his colleagues, the club has long since become a sporting home for the former Cologne player. Gerhardt has been playing for VfL since 2016 – and will continue to do so in the future. The 30-year-old extended his contract early. The Wolves left it open how long this would last.

“The fact that one of our longest-serving players is so clearly committed to the club is a strong signal for the future. Yannick not only stands for passion and reliability on the pitch, he also impressively embodies the club’s values off the pitch and identifies himself fully with our path,” Wolfsburg’s managing director Marcel Schäfer is quoted as saying: “We are very pleased that we can continue to plan with him.”

Almost traditionally a shaky candidate in the starting eleven

Gerhardt is highly valued within the club, where he has become a face and a voice in recent years. An appreciation that often exceeds the trust of the respective coaches in the midfielder. Gerhardt is almost traditionally a shaky candidate when VfL coaches think about their starting eleven.

“I just think it’s because I’m a player who doesn’t stand out as much because of his style of play,” says Gerhardt, who is also not someone – that’s what sets him apart – who causes a stir when he sits outside.

“I’ve had incredibly exciting and intense years at VfL so far, but my journey here is far from over,” he clarifies: “It goes without saying that I feel incredibly comfortable in Wolfsburg. And especially now, in terms of sport “In these turbulent times, it feels great to be able to set this example. I’m really looking forward to being part of this team in the future.”

Return to the pitch in Bremen?

The flexible midfielder has sat outside more often than he would like this season. He was used in only 19 of 26 league games, Gerhardt was only in the starting line-up twelve times, most recently he was suspended against Augsburg (1:3).

Will Gerhardt return to the Wolfsburg starting eleven under new coach Ralph Hasenhüttl at Werder Bremen on Holy Saturday (3:30 p.m., LIVE! on kicker)? In any case, he already has the new working paper in his pocket. At the end of his contract, Gerhardt will be in his mid-30s. So it’s quite possible that the ex-Cologne player will end his career in Wolfsburg one day.
