With nine starts and one substitute appearance, Wout Faes is Domenico Tedesco’s most used player since his appointment. “He likes what I do,” the central defender smiled at the press chat on Friday in the run-up to the friendly match against Ireland.
“It’s no surprise, but it’s a big difference with the previous coach,” Faes explained about his playing time. “In one year I have gone from reserve to permanent value, which is a big step forward. I also take charge more often, as the coach asks. I defend aggressively and feel more comfortable in this team.”
Despite his current status, Faes realizes that a starting place at the European Championships next summer is far from guaranteed. “Of course I also want to play at the European Championships, but I will not be given my place. I have to show on the field that I deserve it.”
One of his competitors is Zeno Debast, who always plays next to Jan Vertonghen at Anderlecht. “But that is competition and it may be cliché, but it makes you better.”
