Sabalenka had to admit defeat 3:6, 6:3, 2:6 after just under two hours. It was the second early exit in a row for the winner of the Australian Open. In Dubai she lost in the second round to Croatian Donna Vekic.

In the fight for number 1, the recent early elimination is a bitter setback for the 25-year-old. Last year Sabalenka made it to the final in Indian Wells.
