Washington Commanders Fielding Calls for No. 2 Pick in 2024 NFL Draft

The Washington Commanders phone line appears to be very busy ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Head coach Dan Quinn told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network that the Commanders had received calls about potential availability of the No. 2 pick in the draft.

This comes after Quinn had said it was “fair to envision” Washington taking a quarterback in the draft. He reiterated this overall strategy to Pelissero, although he said the Commanders would consider “something that you just couldn’t refuse.”

Quinn referenced the infamous Herschel Walker trade from 1989 that helped the Cowboys build it’s championship winning core as something that could potentially move the needle.

Obviously, no franchise in the NFL would like to be on the losing side of a major trade like that, but the value that No. 2 pick holds could fetch quite the return. The Chicago Bears could be destined to take the top quarterback available after trading Justin Fields away this offseason, so the No. 2 pick will be the chance to grab the next most desired signal-caller.

If USC quarterback Caleb Williams goes first, that could mean that the No. 2 pick nets a team either LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels or UNC quarterback Drake Maye. With the Commanders and New England Patriots, who hold the No. 3 pick, both being potential candidates to draft a quarterback, the chances of none of the aforementioned quarterbacks being available after pick No. 3 is likely.

Trading into one of those spots would ensure a top option, and while Washington needs a quarterback to develop, it appears that the window is slightly open for others across the league.
