Less than two weeks ago, Stuttgart’s Mahmoud Dahoud made it public that he would play for his native Syria in the future. At least for the time being, this will not happen, as the Syrian Football Association announced.

In autumn 2020, Stuttgart’s Mahmoud Dahoud, then still working for Borussia Dortmund, played two friendly games for the German national football team. Unlike some of his teammates, he wasn’t on national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s list recently. Less than two weeks ago, the 28-year-old announced that he wanted to wear the jersey of his native Syria in the future.

Although he described the opportunity to play for Syria as a “project close to his heart,” it will not make his debut. The Syrian Football Association announced on Instagram that Dahoud had left the training camp. The reason: They are not able to “fulfill his demands, which were sent to us by his advisor, which will have an impact on the national team.” However, no details were given.

Syrians now face Myanmar without Dahoud

The departure still comes as a surprise, as Dahoud recently said the following: “I learned early on from my family how privileged we are to live in Germany and how important it is at the same time to bring joy to the people in Syria.”

Hector Cuper’s team will attempt to bring joy to their compatriots in the World Cup qualifier against Myanmar in the evening (8 p.m.) without the midfielder. The association did not announce whether the VfB loanee from Brighton would be invited again in the future after leaving the team. Neither Dahoud nor his management have yet commented on the reasons for the departure.
