The Füchse Berlin and SC Magdeburg continue to be neck-and-neck in the handball Bundesliga title race.

On the day of the “big versus small” duels on Sunday (March 24th, 2024), Berlin gave up against bottom team HBW Balingen-Weilstetten despite an unexpectedly difficult 35:34 (18:16) and the SCM beat the penultimate Bergischer HC with a 30th :27 (17:12) ultimately no nakedness.

One minus point and one game less

After its second win in a row, Berlin is at the top with 45:7 points. Champions League winner Magdeburg is still breathing down the Foxes’ neck with 44:6 points and currently has the better cards in the championship fight due to the smaller number of games.

Already a little behind, former champion SG Flensburg-Handewitt is in third place with 39:11 points after its 33:26 coup on Saturday in the northern derby against champions THW Kiel. Masters Kiel slipped behind MT Melsungen (26:25 against TBV Lemgo Lippe) to fifth place (34:14) and can only expect theoretical chances of successfully defending their title.

Berlin was having a hard time

Two weeks after the sobering defeat at the summit in Magdeburg (28:31), Berlin found it difficult in a formally unequal duel with the bottom of the table. Despite an early six-goal lead in the first half, Füchse coach Jaron Siewert’s team was only able to prevent an unforeseeable loss of points against the guests, who kept coming up, in the final seconds.

“We have to look at what was wrong. We didn’t achieve what we wanted to do,” said six-time goalscorer Nils Lichtlein, Berlin’s best thrower along with the newly crowned world handball player Mathias Gidsel, critically in the Dyn interview after the end of the game.

Magnusson was the best with 13 goals

Magdeburg, on the other hand, safely overcame its hurdle at the relegation candidate BHC. Coach Bennet Wiegert’s team never allowed the home team to take the lead. Omar Ingi Magnusson was the outstanding SCM player on the floor with 13 goals.
