Ricky van Wolfswinkel has nice memories of his debut with the Dutch national team. The currently 35-year-old striker made his debut in 2010 under national coach Bert van Marwijk, and tells an anecdote about Theo Janssen in ESPN’s Milan & Fresia Parkeren de Bus.

In August 2010, just after the successful World Cup in South Africa for the Dutch national team, the Dutch played a friendly match against Ukraine. Many of the star players at the World Cup were rested, giving Van Wolfswinkel, among others, a chance.

The current striker of FC Twente started in attack in a starting line-up that also included Dirk Marcellis, Siem de Jong and Janssen.

Van Wolfswinkel has an anecdote about the latter regarding that match. “I will never forget Theo Janssen,” he begins.

“It was of course the first time for me. At one point I heard that we had to go outside in five minutes to start the warm-up. And I see Theo grabbing a cigarette butt and walking into the catacombs,” Van Wolfswinkel says laughing.

“Yes, enjoy it. That was Theo. Theo was Theo, you just got him as he is. He always had that. Of course I already know him from my Vitesse days. I can enjoy that.”

Ultimately, the friendly match ended 1-1. Three years later, in 2013 against Indonesia, Van Wolfswinkel would play his second and last international match.
