The Science Behind First Impressions: How Your Face Shapes Others’ Perceptions

The first impression is everything. That’s why your face immediately influences how others think about you. According to research, some aspects in particular could fuel a number of prejudices.

Face shape

According to various studies, the facial width to height ratio says something about our character. For example, the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt made a connection between wide faces and male dominance, while Nipissing University states that people with wide faces have a higher sex drive and a study from the University of New South Wales suggests that we attribute more aggressiveness to them.

Eyes

Eyes, and especially how we look at things, are characteristic of our character. According to Brandeis University, optimistic people spend less time looking at negative things, and according to a study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience people with anxiety would blink more often.

Eyebrows

Eyebrows are very important for your expression. Scientists of the University of York suggest that they are an important part of evolution. According to a study by the University of Glasgow, high eyebrows cause us to rate people as richer, more reliable and warmer, while we regard people with low eyebrows as less reliable. According to the researchers, these are stereotypes, not true character traits.

Mond

If we are to believe the scientists at the University of Glasgow, we see people with downward-facing mouths as poorer, less competent, colder and untrustworthy.
