Germany will not co-host the 2027 Women’s World Cup. The joint application with the partner countries Belgium and the Netherlands fails at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok. Competitor Brazil ended up receiving far more votes.

Germany came away empty-handed when it came to awarding the Women’s World Cup. The joint application with Belgium and the Netherlands was defeated by Brazil on Friday at the FIFA World Association Congress in Bangkok. Only 78 of the 207 voting members voted for the tournament in Europe, with Brazil receiving 119 votes. Only 197 votes were valid. Germany last hosted the Women’s World Cup in 2011.

The game was to be played across countries in up to 13 cities in three years. All of the planned German venues are in the west: Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen and Cologne. According to the Fifa evaluation report, Amsterdam should be the venue for the opening game and the final should take place in Dortmund. Instead, the Brazilian association is now hosting a women’s World Cup in South America for the first time in the history of world football.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and the German delegation had tried to persuade people in Bangkok in the past few days. The Brazilian bid was internationally favored, also because it was rated slightly better in the Fifa evaluation report.

“It will be the best World Cup of all time,” says Brazil’s association boss

“Congratulations to Brazil, that was a fair competition,” said DFB President Neuendorf. “That’s how it is in sport, you can win and lose. I think we gave it our all.” The decision has no impact on efforts in the three countries to strengthen women’s football. “We will continue on this path,” said Neuendorf.

Brazilian federation boss Ednaldo Rodrigues said he was “euphoric” and thanked his team. “I feel a lot of emotions, we knew it was going to be hard. But we knew that together we would be successful.” Brazil would deliver the “best World Cup”. “I invite everyone to come to Brazil,” said the association head. Infantino said – once again: “It will be the best World Cup of all time.”

The other European associations were behind the UEFA trio. But Brazil scored points on the American continent, in Asia and in Africa. The USA and Mexico had withdrawn their application before Congress and announced a new attempt for 2031.

The global association had previously assessed aspects of the applications such as infrastructure, sustainability, human rights and legal issues. There were “a number of legal risks” in the Europeans’ application, it said. The state governments did not fully guarantee the legal enforceability of submitted state support documents.
