The Lakers Controversy: Free Throw Disparity Sparks Referee Protests

It is being a season marked by referee protests. A few months ago Darko Rajakovic already starred in one of the biggest ‘cracks’ that are remembered due to the disparity in free throws between his Raptors and the Lakers. Yesterday the Los Angeles team returned to live on the personnel line with 43 total visits to only 16 for the Indiana Pacers. «There were two things that we were unable to overcome. One is the 27 difference in free throws and the other is the 17 difference in fouls. And I’ll leave it at that,” said a frustrated Rick Carlisle.

Last night’s game has raised a certain stir about what was already a widespread topic of debate last year. The Lakers are, by far, the team that shoots the most free throws compared to those they receive. Right now the Lakers have accumulated 1,711 attempts from the personal line and have received only 1,291. The first being the fifth most in the league and the second being the second lowest.

Those 420 free throws difference represent the highest figure of the season, equivalent to an average difference of almost four attempts per game. It is also curious that those in purple and gold have achieved this disparity by being the fourth team that attempts the fewest shots to the basket in the entire league. Although, yes, they are the fifth team that throws the most in the restricted zone. At the end of February LeBron James said that emphasizing that advantage were simple narratives. “We attack the rim, we are not a team that shoots between 40 and 50 three-pointers per game.” In fact, with 30.8 attempts on average, only the Denver Nuggets shoot less than the Angelenos.
