The Challenges of a Cyclist: Amaury Capiot’s Quick Return from Injury

The life of a rider can be hard. Amaury Capiot (30) broke his collarbone in the Bredene Koksijde Classic, but was back at the start of Dwars door Vlaanderen just 12 days later. That cannot be healthy, but his Arkéa-B&B team showed little to no mercy.

Just under two weeks ago, Amaury Capiot wanted to take a shot at victory in the Bredene-Koksijde Classic, but he crashed in the sprint.

Due to a broken collarbone, most of his spring seemed to be wasted, but Capiot is today on the starting list of Dwars door Vlaanderen.

“It’s not too bad,” says the Limburger from Arkéa-B&B about his physical discomfort.

“The fracture has not moved and the pain is not too bad, although the cobblestones and vibrations will hurt.”

“It’s not optimal, not anyway, although training is still going reasonably well,” he says about his lightning-fast return. Is it then a matter of having to from the team? “Yes, yes,” Capiot admits.

There was some pressure from the team to start here. I would have waited another week and put everything on Roubaix for maximum recovery. That seems the most logical to me, yes, but apparently not.

“There was some pressure from the team to start here. I don’t really understand why.”

“I would have waited another week and put everything on Roubaix for maximum recovery. That seems the most logical to me, yes, but apparently not.”

So how does he handle it today? Start, get off quickly to avoid risks and train?

“Not that now. Otherwise I would have trained better at home, just like yesterday. That would have been better for me.”

“But if the team sees it that way, then I can only make the best of it for myself.”

The subject seems to be sensitive matter within the team, which is badly damaged. “We have been wringing words all year long about what is and what is not. We cannot change much about it.”
