Teddy Riner to Compete in Antalya Grand Slam as Olympic Preparation

Teddy Riner will take part in the Antalya Grand Slam this weekend to refine his preparation for the Olympic Games.

Since his triumph at the Grand Slam in Paris on February 4, Teddy Riner has not reappeared on a tatami in competition. It will be done this weekend, since the French champion will take part in the Grand Slam in Antalya, Turkey. He will be seeded No. 3, behind the Cuban 2022 world champion Andy Granda and the Finnish 2023 European champion Martti Puumalainen. Currently eleventh in the Olympic ranking, Teddy Riner will look to shine in Turkey to glean valuable points and move up.

24 victories in a row for Riner

Since his defeat in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympic Games, Teddy Riner has no longer known the taste of defeat. The judoka, who will celebrate his 35th birthday next week, has since won his two repechage fights to win Olympic bronze, then two fights in the team competition, won by France, then the Grand Slam in Budapest, two Grand Slams of Paris and the Doha world championships, i.e. 24 victories in a row, not counting the Champions League matches with PSG.

A victory this Sunday in Turkey would therefore only strengthen its status as favorite for the Paris Olympic Games. In Antalya, the French delegation will look great, with the other Olympic selections Luka Mkheidze (-60kg), Walide Khyar (-66kg), Alpha Djalo (-81kg) and Maxime-Gael Ngayap Hambou (-90kg) among the men, and Olympic vice-champion Madeleine Malonga (-78kg), world vice-champion Julia Tolofua (+78kg) and recent Paris Grand Slam winner Faiza Mokdar (-57kg) among women.
