Star striker Serhou Guirassy was released for the inconsequential friendly international matches in Saudi Arabia against the national teams of Vanatu, which Guinea won against the South Pacific island nation 6-0, and against Bermuda (5-1). Instead, the 28-year-old, who has scored 22 goals in 20 Bundesliga games, was allowed to recharge his batteries in Stuttgart.

Guirassy told the head coach of the third-place team “that he hasn’t had the opportunity to be with his family for three or four days during a season for ages. That’s why I’m sure it did him good.” As a cherry on the cake, after two training sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, the attacker, who was born in Arles, France, was given another day off by his boss on Thursday.

Guirassy “brings a high level”

Hoeneß is full of praise for the league’s second-best goalscorer behind Bayern’s Harry Kane, who has an impressive 31 goals in 26 Bundesliga appearances. “Serhou is a very ambitious player and places high demands on himself, but also on his teammates,” says the 41-year-old. “This is something we need.”
