Sandro Tonali Faces Increased Suspension for Sports Betting Violations

Sports betting is definitely a real scourge in the world of football. Last October, Sandro Tonali was already suspended for ten months for betting on matches, including some of AC Milan and Brescia, his former clubs, on illegal platforms. Tonali could well see his sanction increase. Indeed, the English Federation published a press release in which it explains that the midfielder is accused of “misconduct in relation to alleged violations of the FA betting rules.” He also allegedly violated the rule regarding sports betting 50 times for matches between August 12 and October 12, i.e. in the weeks following his arrival at Newcastle.

Immediately, Newcastle reacted to this new affair. “Newcastle United acknowledge that Sandro Tonali has been accused of misconduct due to alleged breaches of FA betting rules. Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations and he retains the full support of the club. Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to make further comment at this time.”

With only 12 games in the Magpies jersey, Tonali is far from having proven that the €70m invested by the club this summer were justified. While he previously admitted to being addicted to sports betting, the man who was supposed to make his return at the start of next season may have to wait a little longer as Ivan Toney, the Brentford striker, was suspended for eight months for broke betting rules 232 times.
