These are Eberl’s requirements for Tuchel’s successor

Max Eberl wants to approach the coaching search at FC Bayern “ideally as quickly as possible”, but with the necessary thoroughness. “We have to find the right coach for Bayern Munich and then also the right players.”

Thomas Tuchel is leaving FC Bayern at the end of the season. The favorite to succeed him is Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso. But he hasn’t given any signal yet as to whether he wants the job. So the club is looking at alternatives. Three names in particular are being discussed.

The preferred candidate is clear. If FC Bayern’s bosses have their way, Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso should succeed coach Thomas Tuchel (50) in the summer.

The ex-Munich player, who played for FC Bayern from 2014 to 2017, would have the endorsement of club eminences Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. A signal from Alonso would be enough for Bayern to stop looking for a coach. Since Alonso has not yet declared his willingness, the new people in charge have to look at alternatives.

The new sports director Max Eberl and sports director Christoph Freund check the candidates on various parameters: Is a trainer available? How much would it cost? What ideas does he have for the squad? What about the question of your own coaching staff?

De Zerbi is also traded in Liverpool

Everyone in the club agrees: If a coach wants to bring numerous assistants with him and replace the existing staff on Säbener Straße, this makes employment significantly more difficult. This would be the case with the Italian Roberto De Zerbi. The 44-year-old Brighton coach, who is also on the list of candidates at FC Barcelona and Liverpool, is known for wanting to have his staff with him when he is hired. The language barrier at De Zerbi could also be a problem.

De Zerbi moved from Shakhtar Donetsk to Brighton in 2022 and immediately led the club to sixth place and thus into the European Cup for the first time in the club’s history. The team of German international Pascal Groß is currently in ninth place in the Premier League and in the round of 16 of the Europa League.

A candidate like Roger Schmidt (56/Benfica Lisbon) would be a logical alternative, as he knows Eberl well through shared advisors and has already worked with Freund at RB Salzburg. Schmidt is currently still an outsider. Schmidt has been working in Portugal since 2022 and led the club to the championship in his first season and to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The favorite behind Alonso is Sebastian Hoeneß

The German is currently under a lot of pressure. After two defeats in a row at Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of the cup semi-final (1:2) and at FC Porto (0:5) in the league, there is already speculation in the Portuguese media about Schmidt’s future.

Higher on the list is Sebastian Hoeneß (41) from VfB Stuttgart, whom some decision-makers see as a real alternative to Alonso. Hoeneß is the son of former Bayern striker Dieter Hoeneß and nephew of club patron Uli.

He was not granted a great playing career, but Hoeneß soon made a name for himself as a coach for Bayern’s youth team. He is currently embarking on a season with VfB that would hardly have been thought possible. The club, which was almost relegated last season, is third in the table and is close to qualifying for the Champions League.
