Ralph Hasenhutl: Wolfsburg appoint former Southampton boss as new manager

Ralph Hasenhutl finished runner-up in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig

Former Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhutl has been appointed the new head coach of Wolfsburg.

The Austrian, 56, replaces Niko Kovac at the Volkswagen Arena after 15 months out of work.

Hasenhutl previously led RB Leipzig to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga in 2017 before joining the Saints the following year.

Kovac was sacked after a 3-1 loss at home to Augsburg left Wolfsburg struggling in 14th place.

After leaving the club, the Croatian said: “I, as head coach, am particularly disappointed that we haven’t managed to turn things around, despite some promising signs. We wish the team, the whole club and their fans all the best for the rest of this season and beyond.”

Wolfsburg are just six points ahead of Mainz who currently occupy 16th place and whoever finishes in that position will compete in the relegation play-off.

When appointed as the new boss at St Mary’s in December 2018, Hasenhutl became the first Austrian manager in the Premier League.

Southampton parted ways with him four years later and Wolfsburg will be his return to management.
