Singer Peter Schilling is proud and very impressed that his Neue Deutsche Welle hit “Major Tom” is being played as the goal anthem for the German national soccer team. The song, released in 1982 and sold millions of times since then, has been requested “regularly over the last 40 years, for Hollywood films, for international productions, for advertising jingles. In the 2-1 win against the Netherlands on Tuesday, the DFB team’s new goal melody celebrated its premiere in the Frankfurt European Championship stadium when Maximilian Mittelstädt equalized. A small tear rolled down his face, Schilling said about his emotions while his song was playing after the Mittelstädt goal. The 68-year-old believes that the refrain, in which a spaceship floats “completely weightless” and “completely detached from the earth”, is particularly suitable for the moment of celebration. “‘Then he takes off’ – what more do you need? Schilling, who once played football as a left winger (“Fast as light and incredibly sensitive”) and even completed a trial training session at VfB Stuttgart, firmly believes in the German national team’s European Championship victory at the home tournament on June 14th and 14th July: “As a fan, I have no doubts that they will become European champions.”
However, it is not foreseeable that “Major Tom” will be heard from the loudspeakers at the German European Championship goals. According to dpa information, the goal jingles at the Euro are the same for all teams and are part of the official song for the 2024 European Championship. In addition, the participating national associations can submit suggestions for songs for the warm-up and after the final whistle.
