Out for “Major Tom”: No goal anthems of his own at the European Football Championship

With an online petition, fans started a debate about Germany’s own goal anthem – also at the European Championships. But according to UEFA, that definitely won’t happen.

“The goal jingles at the EURO are the same for all teams and are part of the official song of the UEFA EURO 2024,” UEFA said in response to a request from Sportschau on Monday (March 25, 2024). “In addition, the participating national associations can submit suggestions for songs for the warm-up and after the final whistle,” it said.

This quickly put an end to the sometimes heated online debate about the song “Major Tom”. For days, thousands of fans had been storming the German Football Association (DFB) with demands that this song be played as the goal anthem at German European Championship games.

DFB will not change the goal anthem either

The fan idea was triggered by the fact that DFB supplier Adidas had accompanied one of its advertising clips for the new jerseys with the song from 1982, which is still popular today. The idea spread quickly on Twitter and Instagram.

The DFB has not currently planned any changes for its test matches. This means that even in the event of a goal against the Netherlands, “Kernkraft 400” by Zombie Nation will be played on Tuesday. The song won a poll.
