  • Now speculation begins as to who Djokovic’s new coach could be.

It’s the tennis topic of the week: Novak Djokovic is separating from his long-time successful coach Goran Ivanisevic. With the Croatian, the superstar increased the number of Grand Slam titles he won from twelve to 24 within five years. Now Djokovic is breaking new ground.

“It’s a little shock, but I’m really excited to see what he’s going to do now,” says Monica Puig on the Tennis Channel about the Ivanisevic separation. There she classifies Djokovic’s decision together with ex-professional Andy Roddick. With a wink, she brings none other than Roger Federer into play for the vacant coaching position in the Serb’s team.

Federer, Vajda or Becker?

“We even joked that Roger isn’t doing anything at the moment,” says Puig, adding with a laugh: “Maybe that could be a good collaboration.” But the 30-year-old doesn’t seem to really believe in a Djokovic-Federer combo. A full-time coaching job for the maestro is currently considered very unlikely, especially in the team of a long-standing rival. Federer seems to enjoy his life away from the hectic everyday tour life and uses the time for his family or sponsorship obligations.

Puig’s co-expert Roddick also believes in a different coaching solution in the Djokovic team. «I’m excited to see who Djokovic goes to next. It seems he always ends up back at Vajda when something like this happens. That’s happened a few times,” analyzes the former serve specialist from the USA. The Slovakian Marián Vajda has worked on Djokovic’s coaching staff several times in the past for many years and celebrated 20 Grand Slam titles with him.

In addition to Vajda, Roddick can also imagine a comeback by Boris Becker as Djokovic coach, who was also at the Serb’s side between 2013 and 2016 and still maintains a good relationship with him today. Djokovic himself commented on his future on Thursday at a film premiere by his youth mentor Nikki Pilic in Belgrade. “I don’t yet have a clear idea of who the new coach will be or whether there will even be one,” reports the 36-year-old.

For now, the world number two will continue without a coach. “I’ve had coaches since I was a child, now I’m trying to feel for myself what I need, what I feel most comfortable with,” said Djokovic, who recently skipped the tournament in Indian Wells and was already preparing for the clay court season early on prepared. The tournament in Monte Carlo will take place on clay in Djokovic’s adopted hometown at the beginning of April, before the Serb wants to defend his title at the French Open in June.
