Nottingham Forest Facing Consequences for Exceeding Premier League Financial Rules

According to the Premier League, Nottingham Forest admitted to losing £34.5 million (€40 million) more than allowed. For Nottingham, which was recently promoted to the Premier League, the allowed amount is 61 million pounds (71 million euros).

Over a three-year period, Premier League clubs are allowed to lose a maximum of £105 million (123 million euros), but £22 million will be deducted for each season the club spent in the Championship.

The Premier League praises the “exceptional cooperation” of Nottingham Forrest, but also wants to send a signal to other clubs that if a club wants to strengthen itself to compete in the Premier League, the ‘Profit and Sustainability Rules’ must still be respected.

The points deduction has major consequences. The club of Divock Origi and Matz Sels therefore drops to the relegation zone. With nine matchdays to go, Nottingham Forrest is now eighteenth, one point behind Luton, which ended up in the first safe place due to the sanction, and four points ahead of Vincent Kompany’s Burnley.

Nottingham Forrest spent a lot on new players and was already counting on income from a lucrative transfer from Brennan Johnson. That also happened – the Welsh striker moved to Tottenham for 47.5 million pounds (55.5 million euros) – but only in September, too late to have been registered in the previous financial year.

Nottingham Forrest has until April 15 to appeal the sanction. Earlier this season, Everton were deducted ten points for a similar violation, but this was reduced to six points on appeal.
