(ANSA) – PARIS, JUNE 16 – Avoid “any form of pressure and political use of the French national team” on the occasion of the early political elections: this is what the French Football Federation asked in a note after the appeals of some of its national teams to go to vote. In the note, the federation underlines that it is “very attached to freedom of expression”, the FFF “supports the necessary call to go and vote”, but “would like everyone to understand and respect its neutrality as well as that of the national team”.

The statement follows the strong stance of Les Bleus striker Marcus Thuram, who yesterday morning called for “fighting to ensure that the RN does not win” in the elections of 30 June and 7 July. Olivier Giroud, Ousmane Dembélé and Benjamin Pavard are just some of Didier Deschamps’ players who have called on the French to carry out their civic duty. The French internationals who will begin the competition in Germany against Austria tomorrow (9pm) were “practically all asked about the consequences of the results” of the European elections won by the far-right party on 9 June with 31.4% of the votes. “Each of them was able to express themselves freely, according to their own beliefs and sensitivities,” added the FFF.
