Supporting your team at all costs, no matter the conditions, can sometimes be dangerous. On January 13, an NFL meeting between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins proved it. While the players played the match despite terrible temperatures, estimated at -20°C, many fans also decided to attend this playoff match.
The temperatures felt were still much lower than those displayed on the thermometer. Supporters braved the cold at -33°C, which caused frostbite. According to the Medical Research Center, a Missouri hospital amputated twelve injured victims of frostbite that evening. Several of them were supporters, hit in the fingers and toes. Other amputations could still take place if the surgical interventions carried out do not prove sufficient.
However, these temperatures are not the lowest in NFL history. In 1967, during a meeting between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys, the thermometer showed -25°C, for temperatures felt at -44°C.
Despite the weather, the Kansas City Chiefs of Patrick Mahomes, whose helmet had cracked due to the cold, won (26-7). They then won the Super Bowl a few weeks later by defeating the San Francisco 49ers (25-22). In much milder temperatures…
