NFL defensive players have used social media to express their frustration with the league’s ban on the hip-drop spin tackle. The tackle style (holding on to the ball carrier’s back while dropping your body weight onto the back of his legs) now results in a 15-yard penalty and an automatic first down. Goodell highlighted that members of the competition committee met with the league at last month’s NFL combine, they watched example videos and asked questions of league engineers.

“It’s a play that has 20 times the injury factor,” argued Goodell. “From that point of view, we cannot allow that. “We have been very clear: When we see a technique that is going to affect the safety of our players, we will work hard to eliminate it.” Goodell said he expects a “transition period” with this ruling, similar to the head reduction changes years ago.

Goodell was asked about the implications of the gambling scandal involving former Shohei Ohtani performer, Ippei Mizuhara. The NFL is monitoring the situation.

“Like everyone else, we are trying to learn and educate, make sure that all of our staff under the policy (understand) the risk and dangers of that,” he added. “We have said for a long time that the integrity of the game is number oneand still is.”

• In our opinion, a new stadium for the Washington Commanders “is justified”said Goodell, who highlighted the importance of a presence modernized in the “nation’s capital”. The team released renderings of a multimillion-dollar project in September, and the new owner Josh Harris has spoken of his desire for the club’s new home.

The NFL considered placing the Buffalo Bills pass rusher, By Milleron the commissioner’s exemption list after his alleged assault on his girlfriend in late 2023, but “felt it was not appropriate based on the facts,” Goodell said. Miller’s case is still under review by the league. Police issued an arrest warrant for Miller in November on a charge of third-degree felony assault of a pregnant woman. Miller, who turned himself in to the Glenn Heights (Texas) Police Department on November 30, later told Buffalo media that the allegations were “100% false” and “exaggerated.”

• The NFL is confident that Sao Pãulo, Brazil, hosting a Week 1 game this year, will be an “explosive market” for the league. The league still has not decided who will be the rival of the Philadelphia Eagles at the Corinthians Arena.
