New York Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu Out with Bruised Foot: Season Opener in Jeopardy

New York Yankees third baseman DJ LeMahieu will begin the season on the injured list with a bruised right foot, an injury that adds to the long list of woes for the former champion slugger.

The 35-year-old veteran has been sidelined since accidentally hitting a foul ball on his right foot on March 16. He is expected to miss the Yankees’ seven-game early-season road trip, which begins Thursday against the Astros in Houston.

A magnetic resonance imaging test and X-rays came back negative last week. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said LeMahieu will undergo another magnetic resonance imaging test later this week.

LeMahieu has been slowed over the last two campaigns by a toe injury on his right foot.

In LeMahieu’s absence, Gleyber Torres will take the lead in the Yankees’ hitting role against left-handed pitchers, while Alex Verdugo will handle that task against right-handed pitchers. Oswaldo Cabrera could play third base on defense.
