Chase Anderson Decides Not to Pursue Contract with Pirates
On Friday, Anderson and many other experienced players had to make a choice about opting out. He was one of 31 players who had the option to opt out of their minor league contracts. This is allowed for Article XX(B) free agents, which usually includes those who have played over six years in the majors and ended the previous season there. They can sign a non-roster contract more than 10 days prior to the start of the season. Anderson ended last season with the Rockies and then signed a minor league contract with Pittsburgh in February.
Eric Lauer, Domingo Germán, Wily Peralta, and Michael Plassmeyer have all signed contracts with non-roster invites to the camp. Prospect Jared Jones may have distinguished himself as the leader of this group, while the Bucs have several pitchers without options (such as Roansy Contreras, Bailey Falter, and Josh Fleming) who could potentially prevent others from securing spots in middle relief.
In the previous season, Anderson pitched 86 1/3 innings in the major leagues, which was the most he has pitched since 2019. The majority of his innings were played in Colorado, where he maintained a spot in the rotation for the second half of the season. However, he had a 5.75 ERA and a 17.5% strikeout rate while playing his home games at Coors Field.
Today, according to Alexander (via X), The Pirates have come to an agreement to release Anderson. This veteran right-handed player is now able to sign with any team.
On March 22, pitcher Chase Anderson is likely to exercise an opt-out clause in his minor league deal with the Pirates, according to a report from Ari Alexander of KPRC 2. If the team does not promote him to the Major League roster, he will become a free agent.
The individual, aged 36, was vying for a position at the end of the rotation or as a reliever who could pitch for extended periods. Pittsburgh summoned him from the bullpen for three of his four appearances this spring. Anderson has performed adequately, pitching 11 innings and giving up three runs with nine strikeouts and three walks. Nevertheless, the Pirates have multiple players competing for comparable roles.
