Julian Nagelsmann’s contract as national coach ends in the summer. Andreas Rettig does not see the danger that the 36-year-old could have already finished with the national team. The DFB managing director praises the coach’s work.

It was last Thursday that Julian Nagelsmann sat in the media room on the DFB campus and presented the German national team squad with which he had been preparing in Frankfurt since Monday for the upcoming international matches against France on Saturday (9 p.m./ZDF) and three days later prepared against the Netherlands (8.45 p.m./RTL).

At the press conference, the national coach didn’t just talk about the players who are new or about those he is currently without – it was also about himself and his future at the DFB. His contract runs until July 31st. What happens next is unclear. When Nagelsmann was asked about the future, he said the following: “If I have a contract offer before the European Championships that I am happy with and where I say that I feel comfortable there and that is where I see myself, then the probability is high “That I’ll sign it before the European Championships.” But, he added, he doesn’t feel “any stress.” Nagelsmann made it clear that he currently wants to work successfully, which in terms of current events means that he wants to do everything he can to play a successful European Championship with Germany.

However, Nagelsmann admitted that there was a chance that something could happen before the European Championships. “As of now, there is also a chance that nothing will happen before the European Championships. That’s actually the case, and I’m not lying. It’s normal that I want to sort out the future. I think everyone has that wish.”

At the DFB they are currently relaxed when it comes to Nagelsmann’s personnel. In any case, those responsible do not have the feeling that the 36-year-old coach might have already finished a bit with the DFB. On the contrary. When asked by WELT, DFB managing director Andreas Rettig said: “We feel completely differently. We experience it here. Julian Nagelsmann lives the DFB. And that’s good. He’s passionate about the cause. We are close and can judge it well. The way he behaves, the way he works from morning to evening and the way he treats the employees here at the DFB: You don’t do that when you’re on a trip and look at the thing like a small project. No. That would be in stark contrast to his behavior, his commitment and his commitment.”

Rettig enthusiastic about the national coach

He believes, Rettig added, that he can judge very well how Nagelsmann deals with people. He would do this excellently. “He and his assistant coaches are totally committed and are trying to build bridges. Last week the coaching team invited people to a staff meeting, took the time and explained to everyone the path to the European Championships. They take everyone here at the DFB with them and that’s good when a good atmosphere arises from within. This can also be communicated much better to the outside world.”

Rettig, who was appointed the new sports director at the DFB in September last year, is also impressed with the team. In the conversation he reported on his inaugural visit to the players, where he had put the name of each player’s first club on a flipchart. “No one looked strange, on the contrary, everyone conveyed to me that they knew very well where they came from. And that’s exactly what’s important – knowing where you started. Especially in light of the justified criticism that there has been recently,” said Rettig.

“The greater the challenges, the more important it is to pay attention to how you behave. The players have recently been quickly pigeonholed – there has been talk of a bubble, an illusory world. I think they all understand what is important and that they have to do their part to ignite enthusiasm in the country. But we must not forget that the personal living conditions of many in our country currently leave little room for euphoria.”
