Hummels on the sidelines?

Mats Hummels is not in the starting line-up for the away game against SV Werder Bremen. Does the veteran only play a minor role at Borussia Dortmund?

Is Mats Hummels on the sidelines at Borussia Dortmund? The veteran’s deployment times are more than manageable. In the Bundesliga, the central defender only has three short appearances in the 2024 calendar year before the Bremen game – a total of 20 minutes of play.

A fact that didn’t go unnoticed by Sky expert Lothar Matthäus. Before the game, the record national player attributed the short playing time to the winter break.

“Something happened and Mats is behind and is more of a substitute player. Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle are two central defenders and have played significantly more than Mats. “It was actually impossible to imagine the first half of the season without Mats,” explained Matthäus.

BVB boss: “In the end, we also need a performance culture”

In the Champions League second leg against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday (from 9 p.m. in the SPORT1 LIVE TICKER), Hummels will probably be allowed to start from the start, “because one player is suspended. Then he’ll get his time back,” explained the 62-year-old.

In the 2-1 (2-0) away win against SV Werder Bremen on Saturday evening, Hummels was again not in the starting lineup. “But you have to ask Sebastian (Kehl, editor’s note) now,” said Matthäus.

It didn’t take long for an answer to come because the BVB sports director was standing right next to Matthäus.

Kehl took the 35-year-old Hummels to task: “He also brings fire, but it’s not a bad thing if you’re dissatisfied. In the end, we also need a performance culture,” Kehl made clear.

Hummels saves BVB over the finish line

Hummels’ short appearances can also be attributed to the quality of Schlotterbeck and Süle.

“We are well staffed in the position and have a lot of quality with three good central defenders, so the coach is always spoiled for choice. “Mats was also sick at one point and lost his training rhythm, that’s not reflected in the statistics,” said Kehl.

But, he was sure of one thing: “He will be needed again.”

Kehl turned out to be right, Marcel Sabitzer was sent off the pitch with a red card just before the half-time whistle. Head coach Edin Terzic reacted and brought Hummels into the game with the restart whistle for Donyell Malen in order to ensure defensive stability against the Bremen team who had the majority.

Although Bremen made it exciting again, BVB also has Mats Hummels to thank for their success in the top game. As Kehl said, “He’ll be needed again.”
