Marquez and the MotoGP rider market: ‘If I go fast, I will have more doors open for 2025’

Marc Marquez answers a specific question about the future, speaking to Sky Sport as follows: “If I have fun and am faster, I will have more doors open for 2025. For this reason today I have to focus on myself”. In the press conference on the eve of Portimao, the Gresini rider also spoke about Pedro Acosta and his approach to MotoGP

RELIVE THE DRIVERS’ CONFERENCE

He is no longer the rider he was ten years ago, when he was making waves and surprising everyone. Marc Marquez, at 31 years of age, is not the same phenomenon who won repeatedly, with spectacular, almost acrobatic driving. He himself points out: “When I was younger I was less aware, I took more risks and sometimes I was fine with it now I’m more conservative, but also more aware. I won’t go as fast as I used to, because when you’re young you have something more.”

“I learned a lot from Rossi, Lorenzo and Pedrosa, today I look at the new generations…”

When he debuted in MotoGP, the Spanish champion had to compete with Rossi, Lorenzo and Pedrosa. He is the last of a generation that has lived his time. “Already two years ago I was the one who debuted with those three. I was the young one who fought against the champions, as I am now Pedro Acosta towards me. I did the race that Pedro did with me in Qatar in 2013 with Valentino, and the same comparison that was made with Rossi then applies. It’s a natural process, everyone has their period and then young people arrive who will take you out in some ways. But I don’t feel old yet, just more experienced.” With experience you change, even in the way you ride, and you can also learn from today’s riders. “When I arrived in MotoGP I was twenty years old and I learned a lot from Valentino, Lorenzo and Pedrosa, now I have to learn from the kids who arrive with a new spirit. The new generations bring news. Look at how Bagnaia, Martin and Acosta ride, they play a lot with their body and so I have to adapt.”

“I really like Acosta’s style”

In everyone’s eyes it remains immediately overtaken by Acosta in Qatar, where the Spanish debutant had no awe. But be careful, says Marc. “When you move from Moto2 you can immediately be very fast because you are very quick in the corners, and I saw it with Acosta following him for a few laps. He has a style that I really like. But after a few races, you become less fast in the corners, on the other hand manage the tires better, it’s part of the learning process.”

Marquez 4th: “I lost time with Acosta, he’s good”

“Pressures and ambitions are the same, even in a satellite team”

Marc made his debut with the Official Honda with which he raced until 2023, before moving on to a team satellite, where the internal climate is different, perhaps better. “There but the pressure is the same of an official team, Gresini’s goal is the podium. Of course, there is a good atmosphere, we joke, but the ambitions are the same. Even in Honda the atmosphere was good, but it remains good if the results are good.” They ask him for an opinion on his Ducati and a comparison with the new one this year. “I have what I have and I already feel better than in 2023. Of course the 2024 Ducati will be better than mine in some points, but I still don’t know the potential of my bike well.”

Marc on the future: “Now I have to focus on myself”

Despite fourth place in the first race, Marc doesn’t want to create expectations, especially thinking about apossible confirmation in 2025. “In the past, in December I had already signed for the following year, it was a different situation. Now I have to focus only on myself. To do my best and, yesand I have fun and I’m faster, I’ll have a better chance of finding a seat for next year. I will always give one hundred percent, because in this sport the present counts. And because at the moment there are 3-4 riders faster than me.”
