Leverkusen’s Unbeaten Streak Continues Despite Two-Goal Deficit

They seem invincible!

Despite the first two-goal deficit of the season, Leverkusen avoided their first defeat in the 35th game of the season. In the first leg of the round of 16 of the Europa League, the Werkself secured a 2-2 draw against Qarabag Agdam in Baku (Azerbaijan) thanks to a last-minute goal.

90. +2 minutes: Andrich crosses from the right side precisely to the head of Schick, who heads in from five meters between the two central defenders and keeps Alonso’s mega series alive with the goal to make it 2-2.

But it didn’t look like that for a long time!

Compared to the win in Cologne (2-0), coach Xabi Alonso made eight (!) changes in the starting line-up, only Tah, Andrich and Grimaldo remain in it. Xhaka and Wirtz (both come into the game in the 58th minute) are initially on the bench.

The many changes are clearly noticeable. Bayer is playing the worst half of the season so far. Alonso’s team is completely harmless up front and the defense makes many mistakes that are untypical for Bayer.

26th minute: After Tah’s mistake, Juninho passes for Benzia, who appears free in front of Kovar from 14 meters and slams the ball under the crossbar into the net – 0-1.

And it gets even bigger! Andrade sends Juninho on his way. The Brazilian is faster than Tah, pulls the ball over Kovar with his sole and makes it 0-2 (45th + 2).

After the break, Frimpong, Xhaka and Wirtz, among others, came on – who reduced the score to 1:2 (70th) with the Werkself’s 100th goal of the season, before Schick saved the unbeaten streak.

This means that Leverkusen still has every chance of reaching the quarter-finals in the second leg (March 14th, 9 p.m.).
