Leo Querfeld Makes ÖFB Debut at 20: A Promising Start

20 years, 3 months and 3 days – that’s how old Leo Querfeld was on Saturday when he made his ÖFB debut. Only 23 Austrian national players this millennium were younger than the Rapid professional in the 2-0 away win against Slovakia.

It was a difficult first appearance in the senior team for the central defender. Because three kickers in his position, David Alaba, Philipp Lienhart and Gernot Trauner, who team boss Ralf Rangnick describes as “potential regular central defenders”, were out, the youngster was allowed to try his hand at the defense center right from the start.

After just eight minutes, Querfeld was noticed for the first time – after a serious bad pass from Florian Grillitsch, he had no choice but to stop Ondrej Duda using unfair means, whereupon he was warned with a yellow card. As a result, he didn’t always seem completely confident in his build-up to the game.

“He did a good job”

Rangnick sums it up: “After the start with the early yellow card, it was a bit difficult for him. He then had two pass errors himself. It was difficult for him for the first ten minutes.”

The German coach was subsequently satisfied: “Nevertheless, he did well afterwards and also had two or three good ball conquests. Nevertheless, it was a tightrope act so that he didn’t get a yellow-red card, that would have been annoying for him too. Overall He did his job well.”

Querfeld remained on the bench at halftime and Maximilian Wöber came into the game.

The youngster’s record in his first international match: 90 percent completed passes (38 of 42), 49 ball contacts, 3 ball conquests, 3 fouls.
